SYMPOSIUM PHOTOGRAPHS : Lectures, Breaks, Banquet, and Athena Weight
The 2/3 scale replica of the Athena bust counterweight from the Yassıada shipwreck was produced for the Tradition and Transition symposium at Texas A&M University (Nov. 2007). The helmeted goddess wears her protective cuirass decorated with a central gorgon head. The original, which weighs 8 kg, was hollow cast of bronze and filled with lead; this smaller, solid cast replica weighs less than 2 kg. The steelyard to which the counterweight belongs has a capacity of 126 kg, making it among the largest to have survived from antiquity. Sincere thanks to Mr. John De Lapa for overseeing the production and casting of this replica.
