Director: George F. Bass

In October 2001, the INA team led by George Bass conducted its annual shipwreck survey in Turkey.  Equipped with the submersible Carolyn and the tender Millawanda, the team visited 12 wreck sites discovered on previous surveys.

The team also found 14 previously unknown ancient shipwrecks and 10 possible wrecks.

Virazon.  Stalwart research vessel of WWII vintage, she contains galley, crew quarters, compressors, and a recompression chamber.

Millawanda.  This purpose-built catamaran serves as tender for INA's submersible Carolyn.

Carolyn.  INA's new submersible is capable of depths of 150 feet.  A central horizontal propeller pushes the buoyant sub down.

Carolyn visits a medieval shipwreck whose cargo consisted of millstones.

Carolyn hovers over the wreck of  a fourth century BC amphora carrier.

The capsule of Carolyn gives the pilot and passenger superb views of the seafloor.

Claude Duthuit shows a tile from a tile-carrying shipwreck to the submersible crew.

A view from above Carolyn.  The submersible can "park" on the seafloor allowing visitors to view wrecks and excavations for extended periods.

Using the submersible, the INA team investigated a wreck found to contain this red figure krater from the time of Classical Greece!
