Frederick M. Hocker, Ph.D.
Fred Hocker is a former Faculty Fellow in the Nautical Archaeology Program at
Texas A&M University and is a past president of the Institute of Nautical Archaeology.
His research is concentrated on the history of shipbuilding and seafaring technology in
medieval and post-medieval Europe and the southeastern American colonies, and the
archaeology of the first millennium AD. Dr. Hocker has taught courses in the history of
shipbuilding, ship research methods, medieval and post- medieval seafaring, and medieval
archaeology. He is the director of the Bozburun Byzantine Shipwreck Excavation(1995-98) in
Turkey and is currently a Senior Researcher and Research Coordinator (Techniques and
Auxiliary Sciences Division) for the National Museum of Denmark's Center for Maritime
Archaeology in Roskilde.
Interests: Ship construction, medieval and post-medieval archaeology, nautical
archaeology, historical archaeology; northern Europe; Southeastern U.S.
