POLICIES  FOR  PROJECT  DIRECTORS

 

Every professional organization that uses scuba diving as a means of conducting their research has a set of standards that their personnel must meet to be eligible to participate in scuba diving activities.  The Nautical Archaeology Program and the Institute of Nautical Archaeology follow the dictates of the Texas A&M University Scientific Diving Safety Manual.  Please contact the Diving Safety Officer if you have any questions about these policies or if you would like to review a copy of the diving manual.

 

All Project Directors for diving projects conducted under the auspices of the Nautical Archaeology Program and/or the Institute of Nautical Archaeology must:

 

  1. Submit a completed Scientific Dive Plan Application (including a Diving Accident Management Plan) for approval.

  1. Appoint a Dive Supervisor for the project.  The Dive Supervisor must be certified as a Rescue Diver (Dive Master training is strongly recommended) and as an emergency oxygen provider by a recognized training agency.

 

  1. Ensure that all divers on their project comply with the requirements for individual divers working on INA/NAP projects.  Specific requirements are available here.  Please provide a list of all project divers to the Diving Safety Officer for approval.  You should maintain a copy of all required documents (individual contact information, training and insurance records, medical examinations, etc.) for each diver for the duration of the project.

 

  1. Ensure that an emergency oxygen kit and an approved first aid kit are available at the dive site(s).  This equipment can be purchased from DAN by calling 1-800-446-2671 or online at www.diversalertnetwork.org.

 

Please submit all required documentation to the Diving Safety Officer by May 1, 2003.

Project Directors who fail to comply with these requirements will not be permitted to conduct diving activities related to Nautical Archaeology Program and/or Institute of Nautical Archaeology projects.  If you are having difficulties meeting any of these requirements, please contact the Diving Safety Officer as soon as possible.
